I live in a rough part of the city of Chicago. When my grandmother passed away she gave us this house and we love it. It is just the area around us we don’t love. So after some consideration we wanted to come up with a plan on how we could make our house safer.
The first couple of steps were easy to take. An alarm system was a must but the costs of some of these are insane. So we did some research and both come to an agreement on one. The other step we took was for our kids. We wanted them to be able to go outside and play but its scary out there.
We added a wood fence around the house and even gated the driveway. When they were out there we would always know they could not get off our property. The gate even had a sensor on it to let us know inside the house when the gate was opened.
After investing all this money into making our home a safe place for my family we had an unfortunate event. Our central air conditioning broke. As much as the windy city is chilly in the winter the summers can be extremely warm. We did not have the money to replace the unit.
We did not want to use window units they can be pushed in. We decided to go with a whole house window fan and put it in the attic. It was great. It mounted right into the window frame and made it so the window could still close behind it in those rainy nights. Well this may seem a little drastic but I love my house and kids so I had to find a way to protect both. In the process I found a cheaper way to cool my house and protect the air quality that my children breathe.
