Universal Design: A Good Investment For Home Improvements
Whether you are looking at building a new home or upgrading an existing home, it may be well worth your while to utilize elements of universal design into your home so that either you can enjoy your home for much longer than you might be able to otherwise. With the trend to living longer lives and spending more of those years living in the family home, there is a real benefit to designing and finishing a home with the principles of universal design in mind.
The Center for Universal Design sets out the principles of the concept as:
1. Equitable use: For useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities
2. Flexibility in use: Design accommodates different methods of use (example: right or left hand use)
3. Simple and intuitive
4. Perceptible information: Design might include pictures, tactile, verbal modes, or clear text with high contrast
5. Tolerance for error: Design incorporates fail safe or correction features
6. Low physical effort: for people with a great range of physical abilities and strength
7. Size and space for approach and use: Design is useable by people of many different size, postures, or mobility.
There are some pretty easy ways to incorporate these design concepts into your home when you’re building it; there are also a great many ways that you can incorporate them into a renovation as well, but it can take a fair bit more work.
Some of the aspects of Universal Design need to be built into a home; wheelchair access is easiest to put into a home when it’s being built, though it was be retrofitted with a bit of work. Some types of wheelchair access that are good to include are entranceways that don’t require ramps, single floor homes, wide hallways and doorways, and at least one wheelchair accessible bathroom.
Other aspects of Universal Design that can easily be installed into the finishing or renovation of a home are items like lever door handles, telephone showerheads, lowered rocker and dimmer light switches, matte finish countertops, and grab bars in the bathroom.
Many features that you can add in the finishing of your home building or renovating can incorporate Universal Design elements with little or no additional cost if you plan ahead; it can prove to be a great selling point later on or, as well, can make your stay in your own home easier in the years to come.

Bathroom remodeling is one of the best ways of preparing a home for sale. After kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels are next in raising the sales value of your home.
Bathroom remodeling ideas need not be reserved for a house that is to be sold, however. You can enjoy a bathroom remodel now, and know that it will be an advantage when the time comes to sell the home.
The home’s bathrooms are the rooms of heavy use. As such, they get a lot of wear and time. They also are seen many times each day. Bathroom remodels can keep your baths looking good and functioning properly.
There are many ways that you can remodel a bathroom. Here are a few ideas.
1. Wall Tiles: Most contractors will tell you that 4 by 4 inch wall tiles are outdated. Replace them with 8 by 13 inch glazed ceramic tiles. The new tiles will be attractive and will help prevent mold. They will also keep your lower walls from being damaged by splashes from faucets. As part of your bathroom remodeling, paint the upper walls, and run a decorative border of tiles between lower wall tiles and the upper, painted wall.
2. Floor tiles: Visible, light flooring can create a feeling of increased space. If your bathroom remodeling project is, at least in part, because your bathroom seems small, install 12 by 12 inch light-colored floor tiles diagonally. The lines and the light color will give the illusion of much more space.
3. Heated Floor: Before you lay those floor tiles, consider heated floor as part of your bathroom remodeling project. Your whole family will appreciate them, and when it comes time to sell your home, heated bathroom floors will be an enormous selling point.
4. Vanity: Use your bathroom remodeling as an opportunity to get clean, free lines. Replace the vanity with a new “floating” type that does not touch the floor. Choose one with a granite or marble countertop. If you like the granite when you’re done, your bathroom remodeling project can prepare you for replacing kitchen countertops later. You may want a granite vanity top with one of the new vessel sinks.
5. Faucets: Faucets at the sink and tub are a wonderful place to begin a bathroom remodeling project. Once thought utilitarian, faucets have become stylish fixtures. At little cost, you can replace yours with vintage Victorian faucets, or sleek bamboo faucets resembling the bamboo fountain in an Asian garden.
6. Toilets: Relocating a toilet can call for major bathroom remodeling. Replacing it, however, is a simpler task, and can quickly update an old bathroom. If you want to further update your bath, consider adding a bidet. This bathroom remodeling project may require a contractor.
7. Lighting: Much bathroom remodeling falls short of its goal because overhead lighting is allowed to remain. While moisture resistant can lights above tub or shower can be helpful, an overhead light should be replaced by wall lights to increase the value of your bath.
8. Shower: If space allows, consider adding a separate shower to your bath area. Keep the tub for a spa-like retreat, but install a shower, too, with body sprays. If you like the natural, spa idea, look for a shower that has stone surround tile. This bathroom remodeling idea is bound to increase the value of your home.
9. Colors: The simplest bathroom remodeling project, and often an effective one, is to change the colors in the bathroom. If the bathroom remodel is being done to increase home value for sale, avoid unusual color combinations. Apply the tried and true 60-30-10 rule to your colors: 60 percent of your bathroom should be a dominant color, 30 percent a secondary color, and 10 percent an accent color.
Bathroom remodeling ideas are many because people have many different tastes. Different locations also inspire different ideas. Bathroom remodeling in Seattle is bound to be different from bathroom remodeling in Pensacola. Many things will come to bear on your bathroom remodeling ideas, but in the end, you should create something peaceful and functional for you and your family.
Home remodeling services becoming increasingly popular because of the value they add to homes. In addition to making them beautiful, they also offer the chance to do any major repair work that may have been neglected over the years. Generally, people opt to remodel their homes one room at a time. They might start with bathroom remodeling or kitchen remodeling then move on to the other rooms over the years until they get the result that they want.
However, the fact remains that a number of people take home remodeling for granted, failing to realize the immense value home builders can add to their lives. The following are some useful insights on the whole concept of kitchen remodeling or bathroom remodeling.
It is the general belief of home remodeling experts and Minnesota home builders that renovating your home every so often will maintain the charm and appeal that the house has both to the occupants and their visitors. A kitchen or a bathroom that is poorly maintaining does not speak well of the people who live in that house, hence the need for qualified, experienced and professional companies to provide kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling services.
Contrary to common belief, home remodeling does not have to be expensive. When viewed from a perspective of cost effectiveness, it can be very beneficial and economical in the long haul. Having regular kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling services ensures that these rooms are well maintain and serves to curb potential problems that may arise. Of course, all this is in addition to making your house look beautiful and stunning both to you and your guests.
Kitchen remodeling is the preferred starting point for most people when it comes to home remodeling. Some, however, opt to begin with bathroom remodeling because it is relatively easier because bathrooms are usually smaller in size as compared to kitchens. The choice of the materials that you use for home remodeling will depend largely on which room you are doing. Home builders should avoid slippery materials in the bathroom and delicate materials in the kitchen.
The good news is that you do not have to know everything yourself when undertaking a home remodeling project. Depending on your budget, your can hire the services of an experienced interior designer to layout the plans for your kitchen remodeling or bathroom remodeling job. Their job is to work with the Minneapolis home builders to produce perfect final product at the most reasonable price possible. So don’t worry, you don’t have to go it alone.
Some people may argue that a simple repainting job will suffice and in some cases, this may well be true. However, you may want high quality home remodeling work to be done on your home so that it is not just pretty, but also functional. We all know that good products are not simply cheap, but they are worth every dollar because of their quality. So when you go out looking for a contractor to do your kitchen remodeling or bathroom remodeling, go for the cheapest from among the best!
Chicago Remodeling: A Newer Look for Your Old House
A state like Chicago is filled with elegant and stylish houses and if you happen to live there, there is really a need to make your house equally stand out with the rest. When your house shows signs of weakening, it is better for you to remodel or renovate instead of buying a whole new property. Your house is a place where many memories took place so you need to preserve and beautify it. In Chicago, remodeling or renovation of your house is one big decision that the entire family must make. It involves careful planning, budget allocation and creativity.
The first thing to do would be to inspect and assess the whole structure of the house. Have a home inspector check out the walls, the roof, the ceiling, the flooring, the rooms, the attic and the basement. It is also necessary to check the insulation, electrical works and the plumbing details. Once you have the report derived from the output, you will then have an estimate as to how much you will spend for the Chicago remodeling of your abode.
The next step would be to plan by stages the renovation. You can first concentrate on the roof followed by the ceiling. The walls and the woodworks should be next. The flooring should be the next phase to be remodeled. If there are some cabinets that you no longer need in one certain room, you may still be able to use them in the basement or attic. Reuse old stuff as much as possible. If there are some rock-hard posts in the house that cannot be removed, do not destroy them but instead use your creativity to plan something around them.
In renovating your kitchen, make sure you follow the work triangle design which links the cook top, the sink and the refrigerator for a systematic food preparation. You can repaint the cabinets or remove them and install ones with different shapes. Chicago kitchen remodeling is fun and brings out the creativity in you.
The bedrooms can also be remodeled depending on the taste and personality of its user. To create a minimalist look, the bed and cabinets can be built-in. The bathrooms are the most commonly-used rooms therefore attention here should also be given. The first step to take in Chicago bathroom remodeling would be to take away all the fixtures. The tiles on the walls and floors should be stripped out next. The bare walls and flooring should be properly cleaned and any remaining grout or caulk must be removed. Paint them with the color of your choice. Install the new fixtures once the paint has dried. New tiles should then be placed on the walls and flooring. Your bathroom in the first floor should be below the one in the second floor so that you save more money by using the same pipes.
The last step would be to paint the exterior of the house so that it would look totally new. House remodeling can save you money and with the right plan and design, you can make a profit if you decide to sell it with its new look.
I was just wondering cause I am moving home (australia) in a few months, I wanted to know where
(gun shop. department store e.g) I can get an air rifle or air rifle scope and other addons.
Only gun club members can have guns and the Police.
We have very strict gun laws here, a couple of years ago
people gave them back to the police
and they were rendered useless or destroyed.
So either talk to a gun club manager,
they may have a junior section, or talk to the Police
Is it cheaper to buy a house or build one from scratch?
I currently stay in Trussville, Alabama renting a small 3 bed room home paying $650 rent $320 power and as we all know, housing prices have shot up like crazy in the last few years. It seems like the cost of labor & materials can’t have gone up as fast. Is it cheaper to build a house than to buy a pre-existing one? Is it difficult to find unused lots around major cities? How much do architects/contractors/etc. cost? Does anybody know some good resources for learning about the process? I’m in the market to get my first home soon, and it seems like it would be great to get exactly the layout & features I want instead of hunting around for an overpriced place that’s “almost good enough.” I’m not a handy person, so I don’t think I’d want to be my own contractor, or remodel an existing home. If anybody has experiences with getting a home built, I’d love to know what you think the advantages or disadvantages are.
