Personally I only watched Speed Racer because of Racer X. He, for me, was the true hero of the story. I fell in love with his story and I felt bad for him that he had to keep his distance from his family for all those years.
Speed Racer was all right but he was way too cookie-cutter. He might have been young and inexperienced but overall he was too perfect and that kind of turned me off from the character, you know, because he had no interesting back story or major tragic flaws.
For me, Racer X was the kind of character a lot of people could relate to or could truly idolize: rejected by the people who matter, imperfect, flawed, yet overall a good, kind, wise, experienced, mature man who has outgrown his childish impulses and is off to protect the people he loves most.
So who did you guys like better? Speed Racer or Racer X?
I like Racer X the best. You’re right about the fact that he has that interesting back story. He’s so mysterious and he just seems to have the “pull” that Speed Racer doesn’t have.
