I have never seen or heard of a drill hole after working on a drill. I'm assuming you're talking about a hand drill. However, you can rent post hole auger and very little of any company rent. They have one or two machines to humans. They are powered by gas and they do a great job. You could also check out the suppliers of ice for fishing. This is what I use (homemade) and fulfills its function perfectly.

In general, the use ax. The problem cuts and cracks are more ice than they need. State fishing regulations limit the width of the hole you made. I think that 12 inches is the maximum in the lower United States. With an ax, you have lots of ice flying in the eye and is painful. Chistle ice also work. But it is not easy if the ice is 6 inches. It's like a foot or more, grind you down so long that by the time you reach the water, is 1) Will the spring, 2) Are you afraid of all fish in long hours or three may have to go to the doctor's eyes all the ice flying in the eye. Ouch. Crow bar also works. The background must be strong though.
